Prof. ISP PAN Adam Burakowski, PhD, DSc

A political scientist, historian and diplomat specialising in international relations, contemporary politics in South Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Southern Africa, as well as issues related to the Global South and cooperation within BRICS. His research focuses in particular on India and its growing role in global politics, the world economy and the international security architecture.

He combines an academic background with many years of diplomatic experience and extensive involvement in international cooperation. From 2017 to 2023, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of India, where he was actively involved in strengthening political, economic, scientific and technological cooperation between Poland and India. He subsequently served as Poland’s Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa from 2023 to 2024.

He has been affiliated with the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2004, where he currently works as a professor at the Department of International Organisations and Global Security. He has also collaborated with a number of international academic institutions, including the Centre for European Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, Babeș-Bolyai University, the West University of Timișoara, and Masaryk University. He has also maintained long-standing cooperation with the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., the European Broadcasting Union, and Euranet Plus.

Before embarking on his diplomatic career, he spent more than a decade at Polish Radio, where he was responsible, among other areas, for developing international cooperation and partnerships with foreign institutions. He ultimately served as Director of the International Cooperation Office.

He currently also collaborates with the Centre for International Relations and Defence24.

At Łukasiewicz – ITECH, he serves as a Non-Resident Fellow, supporting the development of the Asia Programme, with a particular focus on research and innovation cooperation with India and other countries in the region.

Research areas: contemporary politics and history of South Asia, contemporary politics and history of Central and Eastern Europe, contemporary politics and history of Southern Africa, the Global South, BRICS, international relations.
