Why?

The ESG consists of two elements. The first element is a diagnosis, through which we find out how things are and where we are (this is what the ESG report serves). The second element is an action plan. It serves to indicate the right path of development. Diagnosis and action must go hand in hand. Is this in fact the case?

Today, even listed companies, required since 2018 to report ESG, rarely translate diagnosis into action. According to the Climate Crisis Awareness (CCA) survey, in 2020, only 10% of reporting companies included reference to a sustainability strategy or policy, while 28% said they had one. The remaining, nearly two-thirds of companies were limited to reporting. Following Jerzy Hausner, this state of affairs can be called “diagnosis without consequence.” Meanwhile, ESG means not only a new legal obligation for companies. ESG is also a set of guidelines on which direction companies should develop in order to maintain a competitive position in a rapidly changing market.

However, when we move from diagnosis to creating a green transformation strategy, the question of tools arises. New goals need new solutions: after all, you don’t pour young wine into old beakers… This is where the R&D sector comes to the rescue, where you can look for technological solutions, product innovations, process innovations and others to achieve sustainable development goals.

Today, the Green Transformation sets the direction of innovation and R&D implementation for many Polish research and development units. Universities and research institutes see the potential of the Green Deal, which, through funding streams earmarked for green innovation, translates into support programs for specific research and implementation projects that support the green transformation of businesses. At the Lukasiewicz Research Network, most of the so-called challenges, i.e., inquiries from entrepreneurs about the possibility of solving their technological problems, relate precisely to issues related to adaptation to the Green Deal. Together with scientists from nearly thirty Lukasiewicz Institutes, solutions are sought (and found!) to challenges in energy efficiency, streamlining production processes, creating new market offerings, construction or materials science. Also, NCRD supports, through a system of pre-commercial procurement, the creation and development of specific, ordered solutions to the challenges of the green transformation of the Polish economy.

The social sciences and humanities also play an important role. Not only because ESG emphasizes social and management issues. Also, and perhaps most importantly, because green transformation affects the entire economy, the entire country (and even the world) and entire societies. Without taking into account the public perception of these processes an attempt to anticipate possible reactions to the changes, a willingness to bear the costs (if only for changes in energy prices) and to ensure the acceptance of various social groups, this great “new green deal” may encounter resistance, such as the so-called yellow vest protests in France. It should not be assumed that the public and consumers support and like what is green. It is necessary to study how specific technological solutions affect, or may in the future affect, the social environment, what opportunities and risks they bring, what their public perception will be. This is what the technology assessment procedure serves, which is the basic paradigm of the Lukasiewicz – Technology Assessment Center, which I have the pleasure to represent.

The entire speech and meeting can be viewed on the You Tube channel – 1st ESG Congress

Congress participants signed a letter of intent for ESG implementation in Poland.

The 1st ESG Congress, held in Warsaw on January 26, 2022, started a discussion on the future of ESG in Poland, which is expected to help Polish companies more effectively implement and carry out ESG activities, while public institutions prepare the conditions for sustainable development to become an opportunity for the Polish economy to dynamically […]

[119

post-59860","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
