CRESTIMB Project Showcased at ForestValue Anniversary Conference in Berlin, 1–2 October 2024

HOME

The CRESTIMB project was featured at the ForestValue Anniversary Conference, held in Berlin on 1–2 October 2024. This special event marked the long-standing cooperation between forestry-focused funding organisations and ministries. Since 2004, through the predecessor networks WoodWisdomNet, SumForest, Foresterra, and ForestValue, over 80 European cooperation projects have been successfully funded—a milestone worth celebrating!

The CRESTIMB had its representative on the second day of the conference. Dr Stefania Fortino, project coordinator from VTT, presented key insights from the CRESTIMB. Her presentation emphasised innovative developments in sustainable timber-based construction, reflecting the project’s commitment

Workshops on open science

HOME

In September 2024, CRESTIMB, in collaboration with ForestValue2, hosted the ForestValue2 Open Science Seminar. The event showcased open research practices within the forestry sector and featured renowned speakers such as Dr. Maria Pawlowska (VISNEA) , Dr. Rainer Krug (University of Zürich), and Sam Hall (Open Research Europe). The seminar focused on promoting open science, research transparency, and collaborative platforms aimed at increasing access to scientific data and knowledge. These initiatives are key to driving innovation and sustainable practices in forestry.

Participants were introduced to the UNESCO Open Science Toolkit, which supports

CRESTIMB – Kicks Off with Two-Day Event in May 2024

HOME

CRESTIMB aims to develop a ground breaking timber building system for multi-storey structures with open spaces. The system will feature glue-laminated timber frames made from softwood or hardwood, combined with innovative beam-to-column connections and dowel cross-laminated timber floor panels. The project focuses on extending the system’s service life and enabling component reuse by investigating long-term performance using advanced numerical models that simulate wood behaviour under varying indoor climates. Supported by experimental testing, these models will provide crucial insights into creep deformation, moisture-induced stresses, and crack risk.

Key Scientific and Technological Objectives

Innovative Timber Building System

CRESTIMB aims to introduce a cutting-edge timber building system, integrating moment-resisting beam-column connections reinforced with screwed-in threaded rods.

Extending Service Life to 100 Years

A major objective is to enhance the durability of the proposed timber building system, aiming for a 100-year service life under indoor conditions. This will be achieved by investigating the long-term performance of the system in response to indoor climate variations, using an advanced numerical model that simulates the rheological behaviour of wood.

Validation Through Experimental Testing

CRESTIMB will validate the improved numerical
